Chapter Eight: "Rowen's Idea / 'What is this? The Dating Game?' "

The Ronins sat in Serena and Darrian's dining room, all wondering what was next. Anubis and Kayura were in their temporary bedroom, sleeping. Mina, Amy, and Raye were in the living room with Serena, all discussing possible solutions to the current situation. Darrian was at work, although he'd be returning shortly. It was nearly two that afternoon, and the heat was murder. Forty-three degrees on the Celsius scale, and that was on the side of the house that had no sun exposure at this time of day. Fortunately, the house was air-conditioned.

Raye sat opposite Serena in the living room, but soon stood and walked over behind Serena. Raye placed her hand on Serena's shoulder and leaned down to quietly say, "I'm sorry about the other day. I'd just had a really bad day. I'm gonna go back to the temple and see what the fire can tell me about what we should do next."

"Alright, but be careful. You never know when they'll attack."

*****

"I'm tellin' ya I got this bad feelin' about those Dark Scouts. We gotta get back to our dimension," Rowen argued, wary of the possibility of the Dark Mage's forces attacking their dimension.

"But how?" asked Kento enthusiastically.

"Simple. We get in that teleport circle again," replied Ryo.

"I had another idea, guys. Technology here has a few items our dimension doesn't. Maybe Amy and I could build a pair of transport centers so that we can come and go between dimensions as we please. Amy and I certainly have the knowledge, and Kento had the strength for building the outer frame. The three of us could make up a simple teleportation system that only us Ronins and the Sailors can use."

"Sounds good to me," Cye chimed in.

"Me, too," added Kento.

Sage opened his visible eye for the first time during the whole exchange and made his own comment. "It sounds like a good idea to me, but how do we get the components? It's not like our money will be any good here."

"Good point," countered Rowen, "but I have a solution for that, too. Most of the components we'll need can come from old household devices like clocks and out-of-date computers, that kind of thing. The most expensive parts of the whole thing will be the actual emitters that we use to create the portals. Once we have those, the rest should be smooth sailing. So, are we agreed? Is this something we should try?"

"Yeah," Ryo answered, "but we've got to coordinate with the Sailors for the entire process."

"I will," Rowen promised.

The others agreed with Ryo, as they were all anxious to get back home. Ryo missed Mia and little Cye, and Anubis and Kayura missed their son Akira. Sage wanted to get back to his dojo, and Cye wanted to get back to his catering business. And Kento, of course, was anxious to get back to his family's restaurant. Rowen stood up and walked toward the living room, hoping to talk to all five Scouts.

"Where's Raye?" he asked as he walked into the room.

Lita answered, "She went back to the temple. She wants to see what she can learn from her flame reading."

"Flame reading? She actually tries to get information from looking at a fire?"

"Yeah," Mina broke in, "she's been able to tell us a lot from just reading the flame. She'd really good at it."

"If you say so. Anyway, I wanted to talk to all five of you, but I guess I can run the idea by just the four of you, and fill Raye in later."

"What did you want to talk about, Ro?" Serena asked with curiosity running rampant in her voice.

"Well," Rowen said as he sat down on the couch, "I was thinking that the other guys and I need to get back home, but we don't want to rely on the Sailor Teleport. My idea is to build twin devices, one for this dimension and one for ours, that will generate interdimensional portals. With these devices, we can travel between dimensions as necessary. Plus, it will increase our response time to interdimensional disasters or attacks."

"It sounds like a good idea, Ro, but where do we get the technology? My palmtop only goes so far with technological advancement."

"Simple, Amy. Most of the components we'll need can come from old computers, clocks, and other old appliances. The only thing that will be hard to do is build the emitters. But, I do have a solution for that, too. Here, there are a lot of high-frequency transmitters. These transmitters use an oddly-calibrated set of waves to transmit. If we can get eight of these high-frequency antennas and two high-frequency transmitters, we can recalibrate the transmission and create the portal. Your palm-top will provide the basic operating system, and I can design the coordinate tracking system with your help."

"I'm sold, but we'll have to get this done as fast as possible. How many people will be working on this?"

"Well, I had originally planned on it being just you, Kento, and I, but we can have the other guys and the rest of you girls help, if no one has any objections."

"That sounds great to me. We need to get the plans drawn up for this."

"I have them half done in my mind. All I need is paper, pencils, and good drafting tools, and I'll have it done in a couple hours, unless I hit a road block and need help."

"Well, then, let's get going. I can run home and get all the stuff you'll need, or I can take you with me and you can do everything at my drafting desk. I play around with designing in my spare time, but I haven't done anything with it in a few months."

"Yeah, it'd be better to do it in your place."

"Alright, then, let's go."

*****

The next day, Rowen returned to Serena and Darrian's house with Amy, Lita, and Cye. Rowen held in his arms the plans for both the portal generators and the operating system for the computer control system.

"Wow! You spent all night on that, didn't you, Ro?" asked Kento with overflowing enthusiasm.

"No, just half the night. I fell asleep around two this morning. Amy woke me up at six or so, and we finished the plans together. We even got the computer system designed, too!"

"Plans? Designs? What's going on here?" asked Darrian as he walked into the room.

"We're gonna build an interdimensional portal machine," Ryo answered before anyone else could.

"Well, then, Rowen, I assume you already figured out where to get the parts, so all I'll ask is how we're gonna power this machine."

"Simple. Solar panels attached to a battery cell. Any additional power needed can be contributed by the Armors or the power sticks. Darrian, trust us. We took everything into account," pleaded Amy.

"Alright, but how much will this cost?"

"Absolutely nothing," assured Rowen, "as we already secured all the expensive parts we needed from businesses that were getting rid of them. All we need is the manpower to build the stuff. We can get any wood we need from the forest out back, or use the Sailor teleport to get everything from Ryo's and Mia's acres of forest in the other dimension. Whenever anyone's willing to start, we can start."

"Well, I'm in."

"Good, Kento, but who else?"

Darrian reluctantly rose his hand, and the other guys followed suit. Even Anubis volunteered. Lita and Amy volunteered, too.

"Good. Here, guys. Here's what we need for the frame. The girls and I have some other things we can do," Rowen said blankly as he handed Ryo the plans for the device's shell. "Come on, girls. Raye, wanna help? Your steady hands would be a great help."

Raye looked stunned for a few seconds. "What? He asked me? I thought he'd never ask. Maybe this will give me the leverage I need to get him to ask me on a date. He is pretty cute, and he's even smarter than Amy. Sure, why not? I can help."

"Sure," she said quietly, hiding her enthusiasm, "I can help."

"Good," Rowen thought to himself, "She fell for it. Maybe I'll have the courage to ask her on a date now. I hope Amy was right, that Raye really does like me. I'll feel like an idiot if she doesn't, though. Oh, well. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right? It can't hurt to ask, can it? No, I don't think it will. I'll just swallow my fears and ask her."

"Alright, then, let's go. We got a lot of stuff outside in a transport bubble. We need to unpack it and get it down to the basement so we can work on it. Guys, hurry up and get that case built. It's gonna rain later today."

"Rain? It's too hot to rain!" Darrian contested.

"No, it's not," Amy countered.

"Don't ask me how, but I know it's going to rain. Maybe it's Strata telling me; I don't know. I just know it's gonna rain later today."

"Alright, Ro, if you say so," Ryo supported. "Let's go, guys. We gotta get this project done.

*****

"Alright, Amy, slide this board into this slot, and I'll solder the resistor in for you," Rowen guided. Amy did as she was told, and Rowen soldered the resistor he mentioned into the proper hole on the motherboard. He, Amy, Raye, and Lita were in the process of building the computer for controlling the portal machine. After that was finished, Rowen asked Amy, "Can you handle the rest of this?"

"Yeah, I think I can," Amy responded, then continued in a whisper, "When are you going to ask Raye out? It's obvious that you want to."

"I don't know," he replied in an equally low voice, "but I'm worried that she'll say no."

"Raye? Say no? Are you nuts?"

"Well, that's a matter of opinion, but, yeah, I think I am."

"She'll say yes, Ro. I know she will. She's been looking for someone, and she seems to have taken a special interest in you."

"Is that a good thing or a bad thing?"

"In your case, a good thing. Just go, Ro. Ask her."

"Alright, if you insist," he finished in his whisper, then said in a normal tone, "Raye, would you come with me for a minute?"

"Sure, Rowen. Be there in just a sec."

*****

Rowen asked Raye out; she accepted. Both returned to working on the computer, but neither could think of much else beside the date they'd have that evening. The guys had finished the shell for the portal on the Sailors' side, and were waiting for the computer to be put in. Rowen and company had finished both computers in that same amount of time.

Rowen, Amy, and Raye took charge of putting the computer in the shell, while Lita buttoned up the case for the other computer. During that time, Kento made his way to the basement to talk to Lita.

"Hey, Lita," he said nonchalantly as he sat in a chair that was about four feet from her.

"Hi, Kento. What's going on up there?"

"Well, our resident nerds and Raye have the computer almost completely installed, if that's what you mean."

"No fighting between Raye and Serena?"

"None that I saw. Raye's hanging pretty close to Rowen."

"Oh, now I get it!"

"Get what, Lita?"

"I was wondering what was going on when he pulled Raye off to the side. He must have asked her for a date!"

"Rowen? Ask for a date? That's about as unusual as Ryo controlling his temper in that White Armor of his!"

"Maybe, but that must be what happened."

"That reminds me, Lita . . ." his voice trailed off.

"What is it, Ken?"

"I was wondering, uh, well . . ."

"Wondering what?"

"Do you want to go out sometime?"

"Sure, Kento. Maybe a movie or something?"

"Yeah. Sounds good."

"But, I gotta ask. What is this? The Dating Game? Everyone's asking everyone else for dates. I wouldn't be surprised if Ryo asks Serena out."

"Ryo'd never ask Serena out. He loves Mia too much. Besides, he's married to Mia and has a son with her."

"Oh, right. I forgot about that."

"Anyway, I don't know about The Dating Game, but this is getting a little out of hand, isn't it? Pretty soon, Sage'll ask Mina out, at this rate."

"Well, I guess it's okay, just as long as we all understand that we can't be hurt when we all have to go back to our own dimensions permanently."

"Yeah, we'll all get it, except maybe for Cye. He might want to stay behind. I think he's falling in love with Amy."

"She's falling for him, too. I just hope that nothing happens to break those two up. They make such a great couple."

"Yeah, I know."

*****

The computer was installed, and everyone went out on their dates. Kento's prediction was right, too. Sage did ask Mina out. Cye and Amy had another date, too. Anubis and Kayura made an excuse to get out on a date, as well, but returned home early (insert a lemon scene here).

The next morning, Rowen and Amy scanned the Ronins (Rowen included) to obtain an accurate reading for finding dimensional coordinates. These were needed to use the portal generator Rowen designed. Once these readings were obtained, Rowen and Amy programmed the computer to lock onto the proper dimension and create a portal.

*****

The portal was a complete success. The device for the other side was completed, and, fortunately, Kento remembered to grab the computer Rowen, Amy, Lita, and Raye built. When the interdimensional travelers found themselves in Mia's and Ryo's basement, it was decided that the portal generator would be built there, with the solar panels externally mounted on the top of the house.

Rowen decided to be the "test dummy" to go through the portal on this side after redetermining the dimensional coordinate set. This portal was a success, as well, targeting perfectly in the other portal generator. On the return trip, the original generator did the same, targeting perfectly in the generator in Mia's and Ryo's basement.

Author's Psychotic Rants, Part Thirteen

¡Hola una vez máa, mis amigos! I managed to get this chapter out earlier than expected, and I hope you guys like it. The next chapter will focus on the dates that I mentioned earlier. Expect a jaw-dropping remark in reference to Rowen.

I'm going to scrap some if my ideas about bringing in the Power Rangers, but they will appear. Not for a while, though. Also, you might see a person we all know (no, not me) make a guest appearance. It depends on whether she's willing to co-write with me.

If anyone is interested in doing ficart, contact me privately ([email protected] or [email protected]) and I will provide descriptions for the characters, or you can just draw the characters and send them to me. I'll accept anything.

Thanks for listening, guys and gals! Later!

Contacting the Author:

Contacting me is easy. I have nine e-mail addresses that I can still get into, two of which I list at the top of EVERY chapter. They are [email protected] and [email protected] (I prefer the use of [email protected] since I can archive the messages on my computer with very little difficulty, but I will accept messages at either address).

I also have a few screen names for Instant Messenger (whether you use Netscape's AOL Instant Messenger, Compuserve's IM, or AOL's IM [including the AOL Buddy List Window]. I will accept questions and comments on the screen names theseventhsage and theseventhsage2. If you wish to start talking to me over IM, please do not change your IM window, text, or background colors during the session. It is nighttime in my town when I'm online (9 to 11 PM Eastern time, normally), and my eyes tire easily. If you change your colors during a session, I will add you to my "Ignore These Users" list.

For die-hard ICQ lovers, you can contact me on ICQ at the ICQ number 61821525, or you can search for me by using John Bailey as my name (John for first, Bailey for last) AND jbailey for the nickname. I no longer require requests for authorization, but you will be required to allow me to add you to your list (I don't mind requesting authorization, but I will not wait for authorization for more than two days).

Yahoo! Messenger users may contact me on Y! Messenger using the Yahoo! ID the_seventh_sage_2.

I am not always using Y! Messenger or ICQ. I usually use just Instant Messenger so I can talk to my girlfriend. Sometimes, since I am talking to her, I will not reply to a message from someone else for maybe ten minutes, mainly because I devote much of my attention to her, and the remainder to e-mail.
